How to power a room-scheduling display when there's no PoE or cable drop at the door

Across a decade of "room display" threads, the software is never the blocker. The blocker is the doorway. The accepted answer in a 2017 signage thread — after describing a working cheap-tablet build — ends: "The hardest part was getting electricity to it!" A 2023 buyer's thread lists the enterprise panels and lands on the same wall: "mounting requires network drops at each device." One r/sysadmin reply summed up the manager's version: the boss "has absolutely no plans to run cable drops." Here is the full option space.

Option 1 — run the drops

The clean fix, and the one every panel vendor's install doc quietly assumes: Microsoft's deployment page says panels "generally support Power over ethernet plus (PoE+) for power" and tells you to line up networking and facilities first. Budget per doorway for the cable run, the switch port (PoE+ if the panel needs Class 4 power), the wall box, and — in many buildings — the contractor and landlord permissions. In a fit-out, do it; the marginal cost of one more drop while the walls are open is small. In an occupied building, this line item is usually what kills the project.

Option 2 — PoE injectors and adapters

If there's Ethernet at the door but no PoE switch: a single-port injector at the closet end powers one panel without replacing the switch — panel vendors sell exactly this for one-off installs. If there's mains at the door but no Ethernet: most panels also take a DC adapter (sold as an accessory on at least one major panel's own datasheet) and can join Wi-Fi. These halve the problem; they don't remove it — you still need one of power or network physically at the door.

Option 3 — battery e-ink signs

The genuinely cable-free display. E-ink room signs run weeks per charge and update wirelessly — one delighted r/sysadmin reply: "No wiring, no powerline, all you need is to connect it to your wifi and snap it on the wall." The honest costs: roughly $500 per sign at the time of that thread, a management subscription, and renewal risk you don't control — a widely-reported 2025 case saw seven signs' annual renewal jump from $500 to $3,000, tripling per-month pricing on locked-down hardware nobody can repurpose. Cable-free, but not consequence-free.

Option 4 — a tablet on a charger

The cheapest screen that shows a live calendar. Two field reports from the same r/sysadmin thread to price in: consumer tablets kept at 100% charge around the clock swell — "all the iPads batteries are swelling… seems to be a really common issue"; a second admin running a fleet since 2013: "about half of our original compliment of devices are still running, but the rest are swollen and dead." If you go this way: a tablet whose kiosk software supports scheduled charging (charge windows, not 24/7), a vented enclosure, and a plan for replacing units. And you still need mains at the door.

Option 5 — stop needing power at the door

Ask what the display was for. If the answer is "so people at the door can see whether the room is free and grab it" — a printed QR code does that with zero watts: the scan opens the live calendar on the phone, which also takes the booking, which is more than a read-only screen ever did. The one job this can't do is the zero-interaction glance from down the corridor; if a specific room truly needs that, give that room a display (options 1–4) and print codes for the rest. The floor-wide version of the glance — "which room is free right now?" — is answered better by an app showing every room at once than by walking past doors reading panels.
